Why Port Orleans French Quarter Is My Pick for Disney's Moderate Resorts

After years of walking every resort on property, Disney's Port Orleans French Quarter remains my absolute top recommendation in the moderate tier. Here is why its compact size, quiet charm, and New Orleans styling win me over every time.

By Patrick Bain

The Quiet Champion of the Moderate Tier

When clients ask me to name my favorite moderate resort at Walt Disney World, my answer is immediate: Disney’s Port Orleans – French Quarter. In the military, we learn the value of economy of effort, of knowing your terrain, and of keeping operations tight and efficient. That mindset carries over into how I evaluate travel. While other moderate resorts sprawl across massive acreage that requires a long trek back to your room after a fourteen-mile day in the parks, the French Quarter operates with a refreshing sense of intimacy.

It is, quite simply, the smallest moderate resort on property. From any building, you are never more than a five-minute walk to the main lobby, the bus stop, the pool, or the boat dock. When your feet are throbbing after rope-dropping Magic Kingdom, that compact footprint is worth its weight in gold.

Why Port Orleans French Quarter Wins

Beyond the logistics, this resort has a soul entirely its own. Here are the core reasons it holds the top spot in my book:

  • The Scale and Layout: Because there are only seven guest buildings, you never feel like a number in a crowd. The atmosphere is calm, quiet, and genuinely romantic in the evenings, yet it remains completely welcoming to families.
  • The Theming: Disney nailed the architectural details here. Wrought-iron balconies, gas-lit lanterns, cobblestone walkways, and vibrant pastel facades capture the spirit of New Orleans without feeling loud or cartoonish. It feels like a boutique hotel tucked away in the historic South.
  • The Sassagoula River Cruise: One of my favorite perks is the complimentary boat transportation down the river to Disney Springs. It is a relaxing, scenic journey that beats a crowded bus any day of the week.
  • Scat Cat's Club – Café: You cannot talk about the French Quarter without mentioning the freshly made, Mickey-shaped beignets. Stopping by for a batch dusted in powdered sugar—and maybe pairing it with a specialty chicory coffee—is a non-negotiable part of any stay here.

The Honest Trade-Offs

Transparency is everything in my line of work. No resort is perfect for everyone, and the French Quarter does come with a few trade-offs you should weigh before booking:

  • No Table-Service Restaurant: Unlike its sister resort, Riverside, the French Quarter does not feature a traditional sit-down restaurant on-site. You have Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory for counter-service favorites and Scat Cat’s Club Lounge for drinks and small bites, but for a sit-down meal, you will need to stroll next door or head to the parks and Disney Springs.
  • One Pool: Doubloon Lagoon features a fun sea serpent slide and a splash area, but it is the only pool on property. If you prefer resort-hopping between multiple quiet pools like you can at Caribbean Beach or Coronado Springs, you won't find that variety here.
  • Transportation Limitations: While the boat to Disney Springs is fantastic, buses are your only Disney-provided option for getting to the four main theme parks. There is no direct boat or Skyliner access to the parks.

Who It’s Perfect For — and Who Should Look Elsewhere

This resort is tailor-made for couples looking for a romantic yet budget-conscious getaway, families with younger children who appreciate a manageable walk at the end of the day, and anyone who prefers a quieter, more relaxed home base away from the high-octane energy of the larger resorts.

If you have a large party that needs multi-room options or fifth-sleeper pull-down beds (though select rooms do accommodate families of five), or if you want sprawling pool complexes and multiple dining options right outside your door, you might be happier looking at Port Orleans – Riverside or stepping up to a deluxe resort.
